The RFA: what is it?!

An RFA is an acronym which stands for Request for Applications and is the official announcement of the grant program. The RFA is the official document that provides every detail that needs to be included on the grant.

This is an example of the first page of an RFA. The 2024 document includes 32 pages.

Make sure you have the most current RFA.
Note the application deadline and plan to submit at least 3 days prior

Most Important Parts of the RFA

The RFA is a long document packed with all the vital information you need to submit a completed application. However, it can be overwhelming the first or 10th time you read it! Consider this quick list below to determine if you want to apply:

Eligibility:

First check the eligibility section to determine if you/your project/entity is eligible to apply. The RFA document includes links so you can click on eligibility and it will take you to the appropriate section.

Priorities:

Each RFA will tell you what they want to fund. Read the executive summary to understand NIFA priorities and the Projects and Grants examples to identify if your needs will align.

Funding:

Look at the amount range that will be funded under each program and determine if that will fit your project needs. Also identify if there is any match requirement so you have a clear idea of what you need to provide. The 2024 RFA does not require any match.

Deadline:

Confirm the application deadline and always plan to submit at least 3 days prior. Check your own calendar and projects to identify if the timeline works for you and your work. Generally plan to spend at least 2-3 months in preparation.

*Please make sure you adhere to the most current RFA available. That information takes precedent over any information provided here.
